New StreetLite – designed and specified for efficient and profitable operations

Posted in Industry news

The new Wrightbus StreetLite brings a whole new look and style to the small bus sector. Crucially, it also helps bus operators deliver enhanced productivity and profitability in their day-to-day operations.

Capacity and Choice

StreetLite is available in two main configurations, one with the door located behind the front axle (“Wheel Forward”) and one with the door ahead of the front wheel (“Door Forward”). With a standard 2445mm width across the range, body lengths and seating layouts have been carefully chosen to deliver class leading seated capacity, which is key to flexible and efficient operation in this market segment.

The Wheel Forward version of the new StreetLite is available in lengths of 8.8m and 9.5m, with maximum seated capacities of 33 and 37 respectively. The Door Forward version is also available in two lengths – 10.2m and 10.8m, with respective maximum seated capacities of 37 and 41.

A two door version of the 10.2m StreetLite to Transport for London (TfL) specification can seat 31, with an overall maximum capacity of 71 passengers, whilst a two door version of the 10.8m StreetLite further increases maximum seated capacity to 35, within an overall maximum capacity of 71 passengers.

StreetLite is compliant with all current and proposed EU vehicle legislation and is also the first vehicle of its kind to be certified to European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval, ahead of this requirement becoming mandatory for new vehicles from October 2010 onwards. Left hand drive versions of the Wrightbus StreetLite will therefore be available for European markets in the near future.

Initially available with Euro 5/EEV compliant diesel engines, operators will also be able to specify StreetLite with a Hybrid Electric driveline sharing the technology developed for the New Bus for London (NBFL) project for deliveries in 2011.

Safety and driver efficiency

Daytime running lights, front crash protection and high visibility brake lights are just some of the standard safety features incorporated into StreetLite’s innovative design.

The driver’s area, which incorporates a fully adjustable Driver’s module, has been developed to be fully ISO 16121 compliant for ergonomics and all-round visibility, with windscreen rake specifically angled for reduced interior reflection. The top mounted wiper system, which gives an improved swept area, also contributes to optimum forward vision in wet conditions.

Passenger Comfort

Whether in Door Forward or Wheel Forward configuration, boarding StreetLite is easy for all passengers thanks to a wide entrance door and manual ramp for wheelchair and buggy access. Once on the bus, a high percentage of the floor area is stepless and therefore easily accessible.

In addition to the light and airy feel of the interior, created by the combination of deep side glazing, full rear window and full length lighting, passenger comfort is further complemented by an integrated heating and air ventilation system. Whether idling or on the move, noise, vibration and harshness levels are exceptionally low thanks to fine tuning of the unique, patented vehicle suspension system.

The Independent Front Suspension system featured on StreetLite is a unique and patented design, developed specifically for the new vehicle to ensure seating capacity and passenger comfort is not compromised. It is complemented by a four spring rear air suspension system to give the vehicle excellent all-round comfort and ride characteristics.

Performance and efficiency

The popular and well proven four cylinder Cummins iSBe Euro 5 compliant engine (choice of at 160PS or 185PS for 8.8m and 9.5m lengths, with the additional option of a 6 cylinder 225 or 250PS for 10.2 and 10.8m versions) gives StreetLite a highly responsive, flexible and fuel efficient power plant. The durability and efficiency of the Cummins engine is perfectly matched by the latest Voith DIWA®.3E or DIWA®.5 gearbox with integral hydrodynamic retarder.

An exceptionally light-weight vehicle, StreetLite’s fuel economy is underlined by a Payload to Unladen Weight (ULW) ratio of 1:1.38 (based on initial test data), with a number of rear differential ratio options available to maximise efficiency and fuel economy.

Serviceability and Assurance

Ease of servicing and minimal downtime were both key design considerations in the development of the Wrightbus StreetLite and this is reflected in a number of innovative features in and around the new vehicle. A “demountable skid” slides out from the rear of the vehicle to provide rapid access to the engine, gearbox, cooling pack, air filter and exhaust.

The Continental Kibes 32 multiplex electrical system features a menu driven vehicle on board diagnostic facility, whilst the main electric centre is in a single and easily accessible position inside the vehicle, providing a clean environment for diagnostic checks.

Outside the vehicle, the air intake is positioned at height for longer engine life whilst the top mounted wiper system is also purposely placed outside of the crash zone. Should accident damage occur, the removal of exterior panels for replacement or repair is simple, thanks to quick release panels and the Wrightbus AluminiqueTM body structure. The body pillar system is accessible from the outside and therefore easier to repair than steel bodied vehicles. A feature of every vehicle in the current Wrightbus product range, AluminiqueTM continues to contribute to a significant reduction of unplanned vehicle downtime in bus fleets throughout the world.

Specification of high quality and well proven components – such as the HeaVac roof blown saloon heating system and Ventura advanced entrance door system – are backed by a 2 year key vehicle components warranty.

Designed and specified for profitability and productivity

Speaking at the launch of the new Wrightbus StreetLite, Damian McGarry Product Development Director said “There is an ever increasing requirement from operators for lighter and more fuel efficient and cost effective vehicles, which at the same can provide durability and productivity over a long in service life. This was a guiding principle at every stage of the design and specification of StreetLite and I believe that this exciting new midi bus range will deliver the flexibility and profitability demanded by operators both today and tomorrow”.

“When you also factor in the whole life support of Wright Customcare, StreetLite offers operators of smaller buses an exceptionally strong commercial proposition, as well as head turning looks and style”.
